Feb 13, 2021 Musings about the 11th month of the pandemic.

It has been 11 months since Covid19 started shutting things down.

I am tired of people not taking COVID seriously. I’m amazed that there are still people who don’t recognize that they also breathe through their noses. They are so disrespectful of the almost half a million Americans that have died from Covid19.

I was at Mammoth this week and the staff was having to remind the same people over and over to pull their masks back up or they would lose their lift ticket or season passes.

It is clear, except for people who live in a fantasy world of conspiracy theories and misinformation, that most Americas agree that our response to COVID19 has been one of the worst in the world. We have 4% of the world’s population, but currently have over 20% of Covid-19 deaths. Our response is getting better but it still needs to improve.

There is good news. In the last three weeks, the US has ordered enough vaccines to give inoculations to All Americans by the end of July. I personally think it will take until August, given how the supply chain has only recently been getting serious attention. I am getting my first shot on February 22nd.

The vaccines are safe. The five vaccines that have been approved or are close to being approved, have been injected in over 75,000 during their clinical trials. Not one of those people who finished their shots has died from COVID19. They work.

However, in this good news, there is a problem. The vast majority of vaccines for the next six months have been bought by the industrialized world.

That means that for billions, COVID19 will continue to rage until 2022. That means more than just not being able to travel. This creates risks for us all. We have already seen mutations emerge in the U.K. and South Africa. Some mutations, like the UK mutation, spread more easily and are more deadly. The South African version does not spread faster, but we are just learning about it.

While mutations will happen, there is light at the end of the tunnel and I am pretty sure it is not an oncoming train.

My recommendations are; 1) Wear a mask, 2) practice social distancing, 3) help the poor and the newly poor, get through this pandemic to ensure they can pay their rent and buy food, 4) get more PPE to essential workers, 5) get the funding to the schools so they can reopen, 6) support local Ma and Pa businesses; they really need our help.
