Jan, 23, 2021 Musings about the 10th month of the Pandemic
It’s been over 10 months since the pandemic caused us to start staying at home. I hadn’t posted my musings yet for the last month, but a couple of people asked me if I was going to, so here it is.
Christmas was really different this year. There were few events. Our holiday gatherings were smaller. We still have our Christmas decorations up. It reminds us of Christmas from the golden olden days of yore.
The final verse from the original version o the song “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” sums it up for me.
Someday soon we all will be together If the fates allow
Until then we’ll have to muddle through somehow
So have yourself a merry little Christmas now”
I am finished with Physical Therapy! Woo Hoo! I am now able to do everything I could do around the house before my injury. I did a slow jog of 3 miles last evening. For harder to do activities like skiing or bicycling I am about 90% more. I was able to ski chair 3 this past week at a practically empty mammoth. Pretty good for a guy who was in a wheelchair in August.
My Daughter continues to get better. Her recovery is a long road, and she is amazing.
I have started leading a Bible Study in Matthew. To prepare I steal all the questions out of the Serendipity Study Bible (NIV). and then read “The Christbook”, Frederick Dale Bruner’s commentary on Matthew. In these troubling times, it is good to be reading a gospel.
COVID19 is still raging. It has been a year since the first confirmed COVID case in America. Covid did not magically go away. It was not just one person from China and it was a lie that “We have it under control. It’s going to be just fine.“
We have now surpassed 400,000 deaths in American. With 4% of the population, we have 20% of the total deaths from COVID. It did not have to be anywhere near that high. I grieve for all the families who now have an empty chair at the family table.
I now know multiple people who have covid. One of whom is in the ICU. Covid19 is real. It’s not a hoax. Wear a mask. The vaccines won’t be available for all for a long time. Unfortunately, we now know that that the “Warp Speed” team lied about the existence of national stockpiles of vaccines.
I applaud Biden‘s Covid national plan. We finally have a national plan. The LA Times said, “There is nothing new or revolutionary in the plan, just sensible, science-based policies”. If this had been done earlier, tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of Americans would still be alive. It was revealing to hear Dr. Fauci say that it is liberating to being able to talk about science instead of worrying about pushback.
The saddest thing about my comments here about Covid is that there will be people who comment on it or send me a message saying I’m actually wrong. That deaths are much lower. That covid19 is no worse than the flu and that masks don’t protect you. That I am being deceived by the mainstream media and money-grubbing doctors and scientists. That I am making this political. I shake my head at these comments. I will never understand how people can buy into so much deception, conspiracy theories, and misinformation. The science around COVID 19 is now pretty clear.
The last thing I need to bring up is the failed coup on Jan 6th. I watched in disbelief on January 6th when the current president incited domestic terrorists to attack our capital to overturn a free, fair, secure, accurate, and legal election.
What horrified me the most was among the Trump banners, confederate flags, and racist slogans on the terrorist’s clothes – such as “4 MW E” (which means killing 6 million Jews was not enough.) – was the sight of “Jesus Saves”, “Jesus is my Lord,” and “God Bless America” on clothing and signs among those violently storming the Capitol. I was searching for words to express my outrage and was falling short. And then Russel Moore put my thoughts into words.

Russel Moore wrote in the article “The mixing of the Christian religion with crazed and counter-biblical cults such as Q-Anon is telling the outside world that this is what the gospel is. That’s a lie,”
He goes on to state, ”If you read nothing else, read this: If you can defend this { i.e. the attack of the caption}, you can defend anything. If you can wave this away with “well, what about…” or by changing the subject to a private platform removing an account inciting violence as “Orwellian,” then where, at long last, is your limit? “
